If you are like most women, you have tried many forms of teeth whitening products on the market with various results. There are truly so many products to choose from, so how do you know what really works? Trial and error seems to be where most of us stumble upon something likable, but recommendations are always the best. Find a friend or two who have already done the dirty work for you! I seem to be that friend always trying new things, on the search for a great product that really works. Natural remedies are of course my favorite, so I usually opt for those first and that is how I came up the ancient form or Oil Pulling.
In my single years I enjoyed going to Ashrams to stay for a night or two, indulge on some vegan Indian food and do yoga twice a day for a good time. During one of my Ashram stays in Rollinsville, CO at Shoshoni, I purchased an Ayurveda book to read between meditation and yoga classes. I had read about Doshas and Ayurveda cooking, but really the truck stopped there as far as my healing knowledge of the ancient study. One of the most important messages that I took away from the book was oil pulling and of course my Vata body types love for warm and cooked food. I will try just about anything, but the thought of swishing oil around in my mouth for 20 minutes sounded less than appealing. Luckily, coconut oil is one of the recommended oils for the method. Problem solved!
Here is how to Oil Pull:
- Put 1-2 teaspoons of coconut oil into the mouth. I also pour a few drops of Brushing Blend or Oregano Essential Oil (naturally antibacterial) into the mix.
- Swish for 20 minutes.
- Spit oil into the trash can. (Oil can solidify in your pipes and drain)
- Rinse well with warm water.
- Brush well.
Other than whitening why in the world would you want to do this? An overall improvement of oral health is the main reason, but you will notice that your teeth of course are more white, the oil draws out toxins not only from the mouth, but the entire body and increases energy, reduces headaches and aids in hormonal changes. It all sounds too good to be true, but I have to say that my mouth has never felt so clean. Another one of my favorite tips for throughout the day is to add peppermint oil on your tongue for far fresher breath than gum could ever give you.
I hope you found this helpful and will give oil pulling a try! Thank you for reading.
